We are just getting into the hottest part of summer and I don't just mean the temperature! The fishing has been incredible and I don't anticipate it slowing down any time soon.
Currently we are targeting Red Drum, Cobia, Bluefish, Speckled Trout, Spanish Mackerel and a few Striped Bass here and there. We will not be targeting Striped Bass July 16-31 due to the season closure in our part of the bay.
I am seeing good numbers of Red Drum start to show up. While this is a catch and release fishery the chance to tangle with one of these giants is an opportunity no angler can pass up! Often referred to as "Ghosts" due to their ability to vanish in seconds, I always have my eyes peeled for them to slip up and give us a shot during our day on the water.
The bluefish we have been catching this year have been absolute power houses. Ranging from 3-10lbs these fish have been an incredible fight on light tackle or fly rod. I am starting to see them get into their usual summer pattern of breaking the surface throughout the day giving us a nice treat of entertainment between spots.
Speckled Trout have showed up in pretty good numbers right now. There is no telling how long the bite will last but the fish we have been catching are beautiful, averaging 22-24 inches. We have been throwing 1/2 ounce jig heads paired with 4-5 inch soft plastics along structure in 3-10 feet of water picking away at them.
Cobia are beginning to show up in good numbers. While trolling and chumming in this area seems to be more effective right now we are still getting shots at the man in the brown suit cruising on top. I expect that bite to pick up for us throwing artificial at them by the end of the month or sometime by mid august. September seems to be the best all around Cobia month for me in the middle bay region.
I am looking forward to getting out on the water with all of my clients that have already booked for the remainder of the season, it looks like we are in for one hell of a season!
I still have dates available for the rest of the season. Be sure to check out my online calendar, give me a call or shoot me an email and we can get your fishing adventure scheduled!
